Identify and Correct Examples in which Incorrect or Extraneous Punctuation has been Used
Use a colon in the following situations:
- Before a list
Example: The following students will audition for the play: John, Cynthia, Ted, Nadine, and Terry.
- Before a formal quotation
Example: Patrick Henry made his stand very clear: "Give me liberty, or give me death."
- Before an explanation or example
Example: The course gave me a great deal of trouble: hundreds of pages of reading, many papers, and essay tests.
- Before a long question
Example: The jurors knew that they had a difficult problem to solve: Was the accused at the scene of the crime or was his shaky alibi believable?
