Introduction to Virginia Placement Test for English
The VPT English test is designed to assess your writing, reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and research skills. The test consists of an essay question and 40 multiple-choice questions.
The written essay portion is graded on five dimensions (organization, focus, development and support, vocabulary, and sentence structure and mechanics-each of which is graded separately on a scale from 1 to 6) and constitutes 60 percent of your VPT English score. The 40-item multiple-choice test assesses a range of reading and writing fundamentals and is worth 40 percent of your score.
This instructional program contains the information you need to prepare for and pass both areas of the VPT English test. By preparing and obtaining a better score, you will have more class options and can get a head start towards achieving your academic goals.
To the left you will notice three sub-links that will cover each skill area: Reading Comprehension, Writing Skills, and Written Essay. The Reading Comprehension and Writing Skills links each include their own instruction followed by eight practice tests. The Written Essay link provides detailed instruction on successfully developing a composition on a given topic.
