Introduction to Virginia Placement Test for Math
The Math section of the Virginia Placement Test covers nine skill areas:
- MTE 1: Operations with Positive Fractions
- MTE 2: Operations with Positive Decimals and Percents
- MTE 3: Algebra Basics
- MTE 4: First Degree Equations and Inequalities in One Variable
- MTE 5: Linear Equations, Inequalities and Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables
- MTE 6: Exponents, Factoring and Polynomial Equations
- MTE 7: Rational Expressions and Equations
- MTE 8: Rational Exponents and Radicals
- MTE 9: Functions, Quadratic Equations, and Parabolas
This instructional program contains the information you need to prepare for and pass all nine skill areas tested on the VPT for Math. By preparing and obtaining a better score, you will have more class options and can get a head start towards achieving your academic goals.
To the left you will notice links to each skill area. Each skill area includes its own instruction followed by four practice tests.
It is suggested that you first familiarize yourself with the topics covered within each unit by taking one of the four practice tests. This first test (or pre-test) will clearly show how well you understand the material and what must be learned to score well to achieve mastery of the material. Answers and worked-out solutions are shown at the end of each test. If you score above 90% on the pre-test, move on to the next MTE skill area and take another pre-test. If your score indicates need for further instruction, use the explanations to plan further study and improvement.
With three more practice tests in each skill area, a cycle of testing, reviewing, and improving can be repeated. Each cycle will improve your ability to pass each succeeding test.
The program is flexible, so you can begin working through the material from the beginning covering all skill areas, or you can navigate to areas of specific need.
